Two-sided (duplex) printing not working?
If the two-sided option is missing or grayed out, or only one side prints, the cause is usually the printer model, the driver, or a paper size or type that automatic duplex does not support. Check them in that order.

What is happening?
Step 1 of 2Likely cause
Likely cause: the printer has no automatic duplexing, the maker’s driver is not installed, or the paper size or type does not support it.
- 1Check your printer’s manual or specs for automatic two-sided printing. Printers without it can still print both sides manually.
- 2In Acrobat Reader, check Printer Properties if the main dialog lacks duplex. If it is still unavailable, check the supported software for your exact model and operating system.
- 3Choose plain paper in a size your printer supports for automatic duplex, often Letter or A4.
- 4If it is still missing, use manual two-sided printing.
Likely cause
Likely cause: the paper size or type in the app or driver does not match automatic duplex, or the job is set to manual.
- 1Select both document pages for the test, not Current page or an odd-only range. Use one copy, with one document page per printed side.
- 2Match the paper size and type in the app and the driver to the paper in the tray.
- 3Enable automatic two-sided printing if supported. A manual setting waits for you to reload the paper; it does not turn the sheet automatically.
- 4Print one copy of both pages in our existing duplex test. A one-page selection does not test printing a second document page on the back.
Likely cause
Likely cause: the flip or binding edge setting, or how the paper was reloaded for manual duplex.
- 1Choose Flip on Long Edge for portrait pages bound like a book, or Short Edge for flip-over pages.
- 2For manual duplex, follow the exact printer’s reload instructions and the app’s prompt. Test one sheet first; do not apply another model’s face-up or face-down rule.
- 3Print our duplex test page first to check orientation before a long job.
Most likely causes
The printer has no automatic duplexing
Some printers print both sides automatically and others do it manually, where you reload the paper. Apple notes the two-sided option only works if the printer supports it.
The maker’s driver is not installed
Brother says a missing two-sided option usually means its driver is not installed, and that downloading the full driver package for your model fixes it.
Paper size or type not supported
Automatic duplex works with a limited set of plain paper sizes. Canon lists Letter and A4 for some models, Epson says the option is grayed out unless plain Letter or A4 is chosen on the WF-2860, and HP says not to duplex envelopes, photo paper or transparencies.
Settings in the app and driver disagree
Canon’s checks include matching the paper size in the app and driver to the loaded paper, and the media type to the paper.
What to try, in order
- 1Confirm what your printer supportsCheck the manual or specs for automatic two-sided printing and the paper sizes it supports. If it has none, use manual two-sided printing.
- 2Turn it on in the driverOn Windows, check the app’s print settings and printer Properties. On current Mac print dialogs, look for Double-sided and choose On if offered. Names and availability vary with the app and printer.
- 3Use plain paper in a supported sizeChoose plain paper and a supported size such as Letter or A4, and match the paper size and type in the app, the driver and the tray.
- 4Test with one sheetSelect both pages of our duplex test, one copy and one page per printed side. Enable two-sided printing, then compare the front/back arrows. Check the test setup before a long job.
Let the first side dry before the second side prints or before you reload paper. Canon says the drying pause is normal, and Epson notes ink can smear.
When to contact support
If the manual confirms automatic duplex but a supported paper/job setup still fails, record the printer model, operating system, app and paper settings for support. A missing option alone does not prove that the printer lacks duplex hardware.
Inkjet or laser?
Inkjet printers
On inkjets, the first side needs time to dry, so a pause between sides is normal. Use plain paper, since photo and glossy papers usually cannot be duplexed automatically.
Duplex test pageLaser printers
Some laser printers duplex automatically and others print the second side through a manual feed slot. HP’s page for its Samsung laser printers says only models that support duplex print both sides automatically.
Duplex test pageFirst check: are two pages actually selected?
Use one copy of our existing two-page duplex test, selecting pages 1 and 2. Set one document page per printed side and enable two-sided printing. If only one source page is selected, there is no second selected document page to place on the back. For a range or odd/even filter, see our existing page-range guide.
If duplex or black-and-white controls are missing in Reader
Adobe’s Acrobat Reader guide separates Print on both sides from Print in grayscale. They are different settings. If duplex is absent from the main dialog, Adobe suggests checking Printer Properties. Also check the selected physical printer and preview; Multiple pages per sheet puts several document pages on one side rather than enabling a back side.
Manual reload: use your model’s instructions
Microsoft’s Word guide distinguishes automatic duplex from a manual reload prompt and recommends a test to establish reload direction. Start with one sheet and follow the exact printer’s guide, rather than a general tray-direction rule. These new checks and the Mac menu source were reviewed October 16, 2026; older maker notes below retain their model limits.
What each maker says
- HP: on Windows, two-sided printing is on the Layout, Features or Finishing tab, with Flip on Long Edge or Short Edge. On a Mac, set Double-sided to On or On (Short Edge). For manual duplex, follow the exact model’s paper-reload instructions; check orientation with one sheet before printing a stack. HP lists paper from 60 to 105 g/m² and says not to duplex envelopes, photo paper or transparencies.
- Brother: choose 2-sided in Printing Properties on Windows, or the two-sided option in the Layout menu on a Mac. If the option is missing, Brother says to install the full driver for your model. Automatic 2-sided works on regular paper, and some models print odd pages first and ask you to reload for manual 2-sided.
- Canon: tick Duplex Printing and Automatic in the driver. If it does not work, Canon checks that both are on, that the paper size suits automatic duplex, and that the paper size and media type match the loaded paper. Unticking Automatic switches to manual duplex.
- Epson: choose an Auto long-edge or short-edge setting in the driver. On the WF-2860 the option is grayed out unless plain Letter or A4 paper is selected, and Epson’s manual options are for paper that cannot be printed on both sides automatically.
Apple’s current guide describes the Double-sided pop-up menu in File → Print, with On or On (Short Edge). Available controls depend on the printer and app. In Word, Microsoft says the Print One Sided menu shows Print on Both Sides only when the printer supports it.
