All spacing and margin measurements are in millimeters (mm).

Inch sizes are converted exactly at 25.4 mm per inch. Edit the spacing below for any other size.

Print your grid at the chosen size

  1. Choose square lines or dots, then select your paper size. Enter spacing and four margins in millimeters.
  2. Download the PDF and load matching A4 or Letter paper. In Acrobat desktop, choose Actual size rather than Fit. Other apps may call this 100% scale.
  3. Print one sheet. Measure between the centers of marks several intervals apart, then divide by the number of intervals. Ten 5 mm intervals should span 50 mm. If the measurement differs, try the scale and margin check.

The screen preview is scaled to fit; do not measure it with a ruler. Zero margins do not make a printer borderless. Marks outside the printer’s printable area may be clipped, so increase the margins if needed. Physical print output has not been tested.

Square lines or dot grid?

Square mode draws continuous horizontal and vertical rules. Dot mode places dots at the same evenly spaced intersections. Both leave the sheet clean for drawing, planning or notes, without diagnostic marks or a watermark. For horizontal writing rules, use our lined paper generator. To measure in inches or centimeters, print a printable ruler; to size a finger, use the printable ring sizer. To check straightness and alignment instead, use the printer grid test page.

How the layout is measured

A4 is 210 × 297 mm. Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches, or 215.9 × 279.4 mm. Both downloads contain one portrait page. PDF coordinates use 72 points per inch: millimeters × 72 ÷ 25.4.

The first line or dot center starts at the top and left margins. Each next mark is one spacing interval away. The tool fits complete cells within the available rectangle; any leftover space stays at the right and bottom. Margins are minimum distances to mark centers. At zero margins, a half-stroke inset (0.1 mm) or dot-radius inset (0.3 mm) keeps marks inside the PDF. Square rules are 0.2 mm wide and dots are 0.6 mm across. These are design choices, not universal paper standards.

1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, 5 mm or 1 cm grid

The grid size menu sets common spacings in one step: 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) and 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) for US-style graph paper, and 5 mm or 1 cm (10 mm) for metric grids. The inch sizes are exact conversions at 25.4 mm per inch, not a paper-industry standard. A 1/4 inch grid on Letter paper with the default 15 mm margins fits 29 × 39 complete squares.

Spacing accepts 2–30 mm and each margin accepts 0–100 mm; leave room for at least one complete cell in each direction. Editing the spacing switches the menu to Custom. Choose black for stronger contrast or gray for lighter marks; no measured ink-saving claim is made.

Dimensions checked against Microsoft’s paper-size reference; print scaling checked against Adobe’s Acrobat desktop instructions on October 18, 2026. These references do not establish which paper sizes your printer supports.

Good questions

What size is the downloaded PDF?
A4 is 210 × 297 mm. Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches (215.9 × 279.4 mm). The PDF contains one portrait page in the size you select.
What does the spacing measure?
Spacing is the center-to-center distance between neighboring lines or dots, horizontally and vertically. The PDF encodes that distance; print at Actual size (100%) on matching paper and measure a first print. Printer settings and non-printable edges can affect output.
Does the preview show the paper at life size?
No. The preview is scaled to your screen. It uses the same mark positions as the PDF, but a ruler on the screen will not measure the printed spacing.
Are the settings uploaded or saved?
The sheet is generated in your browser. Custom settings are not saved or uploaded. The site can count anonymous PDF download clicks using the paper size, but not your spacing or margins; the privacy page explains the opt-out.
